My name is Heather. In 2009, at the age of 14, I was diognosed with Scoliosis. Scoliosis is an un-natural curvature of the spine. When I was diognosed I had no idea what Scoliosis was. Through research I learnt that this condition effects around 1 in every hundred children and teenagers in the UK. More often than not the diognosis is of Idiopathic Scoliosis, this means there is no obvious or genetic cause to the condition. I have Idiopathic Scoliosis. This condition is most common in teenagers, developing as they undergo growth-sperts. By November 2010 the curve in the top of my spine had reached over 70 degrees. Normally corrective surgery is not undergone until the patient reaches 18 and stops growing. However as my curve was over 50 degrees i was seen as a serious case. I was operated on April this year, at the age of 16. Now nearly 11 weeks on from surgery i have completed my GCSEs and am recovering well from the op. As you can see the difference after surgery is great. I feel so much better and have decided to start this blog to document the rest of my recovery and 'transformation' from school girl into college student and beyond. I'm 59 years old and female. I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with COPD and I was beyond scared! My lung function test indicated 49% capacity. After having had flu a year ago, the shortness of breath, coughing and chest pains continued even after being treated with antibiotics. I've been smoking two packs a day for 36 years.
